Just
a short walk from the Three Bar Lodge flows the St. Mary,
a
blue ribbon, catch and release fly fishing river. July starts
the summer on the river. About this time the lakes cool
down and the water level in the river reaches that perfect
point. Dry fly fishing is what the St. Mary is famous for.
In the summer there isn't anything more enjoyable than drifting
a Hopper or an Adam's on the surface and then watching a
large cutthroat either sip it under or violently attack
it. Prolific hatches occur throughout the river in the summer.
Caddis and mayfly are favorites but one can't dismiss the
Stone Flies or even the Midges.

In
a good day's fishing it's not unusual to catch 20 or 30
cutthroat. The average trout will be from 10 to 16 inches.
The lodge has fly fishing equipment available for those
interested. Local guides are available for those interested
in guide trips or drifting. Fly fishing season opens June
15th.
